August 15, 2008: Looking East From 155 Water Street During a Thunderstorm

Around 5pm today we got word that the entire city was under a tornado watch. Our office looks out on the East River, and we could see that dark black clouds were blowing in from Manhattan. So of course me and Tien grabbed our cameras and ran up to the roof. When I was shooting this pano, I noticed I was standing right below a gigantic metal structure-- probably the base of an old water tower-- and I thought, Jesus, this is such a bad idea.

This was approximately when I started biking from Williamsburg to Sunset Park. While I was crossing through Prospect Park it started raining pretty hard. By the time I was about five blocks from my destination, I was completely soaked, and I'd been spooked enough by the brevity separating the latest lightening and thunder clap that I was giving those pedals a little extra love. I didn't hear about the tornado stuff until I got inside. It might the first time I've ever actually been frightened by the weather.
Nice snap.
Stunning shot Jake. I love the light and perspective.
